First-Ever International Standard for Measuring Food Loss & Waste Launched

One of our core beliefs at LeanPath is that we manage what we measure. It’s at the heart of our mission of making food waste prevention easy: measurement leads to understanding which leads to prevention. When LeanPath was founded in 2004, the concept of measuring food waste was largely a foreign one in many kitchens—that’s why we’re especially excited that last month, the Food Loss & Waste Protocol launched the Food Loss and Waste Accounting and Reporting (FLW) Standard, a first-of-its-kind framework designed to help organizations, nations, regions and other entities around the world report on food loss and waste.

The FLW Standard will enable unprecedented transparency and comparability of food loss and waste data, making it easier to analyze and compare food waste streams between organizations using the Standard.

Beyond the reporting benefits, the Standard will motivate more entities to measure their food loss and waste more often, with greater attention to detail. Our experience has shown time again that this first step of measurement is actually its own highly successful food waste reduction intervention, regardless of how people ultimately use the data they collect. Simply by putting a measurement program in place, organizations raise employee awareness and drive behavior change, much of it at a subconscious level.

We’ve seen foodservice operations of many sizes, in many industries, achieve stellar food waste reduction results when measuring their food waste and acting on the data they collect. We’re thrilled that the FLW Standard has been released and we’re here as a resource to support any organizations and entities that are ready to start down the path of reporting in conformity with the Standard.
